We don’t usually do wine tastings on a Tuesday evening, but we couldn’t resist hosting a tasting when you have two legends of South African winemaking in town together. So we welcome Barbara Melck (winemaker at Biodynamic Pioneer Reyneke). And Rudiger Gretschel (winemaker at Holism from rugged Piekerneerskloof & cellarmaster at Krone who is known as one of the best sparkling wine producers in South Africa).
About Reyneke
Reyneke is a pioneer of biodynamic winemaking and the stuff of legend. These are wines that speak of the place from which they hail, bursting with energy and vitality.
Vigneron, Johan Reyneke, believes there’s a lot to be said for the way winemaking used to be. There were no chemicals, no “technological advancements” that made the process a process, and natural balance was more important than balance sheets.
Some people dismiss it as old-fashioned nostalgia, but we like to think of it as ancient wisdom. At the far, they embrace this approach it as much as possible. Not just because it’s better for the earth, but because it makes for better wine. For Reyneke, the holy grail of winemaking is to produce a wine which is unique to its terroir – a wine that honestly reflects the soil, prevailing climate and method of cultivation.
About Krone
Cap Classique is South Africa’s classification for sparkling wines, and Krone have one of the highest reputation for making not just the best sparkling wines in South Africa, but some of the best in the world. The wines are made in traditional Champagne method, and Rudiger blends from multiple parcels to create sparkling wine of finess and precision.
Family-owned, the Rands family purchased the farm in 2012. Brother and sister, Svend and Abigail are involved intimately in all aspects of the estate, from vineyard plantings to marketing.
About Swartberg Wingerde
The Piekerneerskloof, a mountainous region in the Western Cape renowned for its citrus and rooibos tea farming, is in sharp focus amongst wine enthusiasts on the lookout for up-and-coming wine sensations and the area seems set to become the next South African rising star. The beauty of the Piekerneerskloof is a combination of rough wilderness, magnified by its altitude and the proximity to the West Coast of the Atlantic Ocean, which brings cool breezes making viticulture possible.
Rudiger searched for half a lifetime to find the perfect opportunity in Piekerneerskloof. He found it in a 1000-hectare property at the foot of the towering Swartberg Mountain. Captivating in its untouched natural beauty, only a few hectares of land are under cultivation.
