We are joined for our first-ever Central Otago tasting by Tim Kerruish, the founder and owner of the fabulous Folding Hill winery in the prestigious Central Otago region of New Zealand. Tim’s son is studying in Birmingham, so we though we would grab the opportunity to get him to work whilst visiting him! Central Otago is known worldwide as one of the best areas for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and Folding Hill are one of the most highly regarded producers in the area and despite their tiny size, produce wines that punch well above their weight on the world stage.
About Folding Hill
Folding Hill is a small family-owned vineyard nestled on a northern terrace of Bendigo Creek, Central Otago. It was established in 2003 by Tim and Nikki Kerruish and has been an integral part of family life for the couple and their 4 children ever since. In fact, the name arose when a young Matthew (now 21) enquired “Why are those mountains folding?!” The 4.5-hectare vineyard consists predominantly of pinot noir with a small block of chardonnay planted in 2016. Our approach to winemaking is based on the traditional philosophy and practices of the ‘Old World’. We believe that hand picking optimally ripe fruit and then gently guiding it through vinification with as little intervention as possible allows us to produce elegant wines with flavour and structure that authentically reflect the special place they come from – wines that really are “Handmade from Central Otago”
Tim Kerruish
Tim grew up on the Isle of Man where he developed a deep love for the outdoors. He went on to train as a doctor at the University of Liverpool. He has worked across the world, the UK, Wales, Isle of Man Australia and New Zealand as an A&E consultant with a special interest in sports medicine, working with the IOM Commonwealth Games team and at the IOM TT races. A fishing trip initially drew him to NZ but then the magic of Central Otago and a unique opportunity to follow a lifelong interest in wine kept him there. Folding Hill was established in 2003 with our first vintage in 2007 and Tim has been at the forefront of this small family business right from the very beginning.
