Penfolds need very little introduction; they are one of the world’s most iconic New World producers. The Australian mega-producer manages to produce wines at multiple quality levels, from those in the supermarket to those in high-end restaurants and the best fine wine collections in the world. Of course, we will focus on the latter style. Like all wine lovers, we have delighted in Penfolds wines for years, so it is a real honour to get them over to Loki to host a tasting for us.
We will be joined at this tasting by Mark Davenport from Penfolds for a magnificent tasting showcasing some of their top wines. He will take you through some of the Estate’s best wines. This includes a very special treat of Penfold’s iconic wine “Grange” where we will be trying a back vintage from 1998 worth over £500 RRP!
About Penfolds
Penfolds is an Australian wine producer founded in Adelaide in 1844 by Christopher Rawson Penfold, an English physician who emigrated to Australia, and his wife, Mary Penfold. It is one of Australia’s oldest wineries; initially, the Penfolds produced fortified wines in the style of sherry and port; it was only in the 1940s that the focus changed to non-fortified wines. This new direction led to experiments by Penfolds’ chief winemaker, Max Schubert, (who backed by the chair of the board visited Europe following the end of World War II to learn about sherry production) however, it was the time spent by Schubert in Bordeaux that eventually led to the production of Penfolds’ and Australia’s most famous wine, “Grange Hermitage”, later renamed “Grange”. This wine propelled Penfolds onto the global stage, leading eventually to them winning New World Winery of the Year in 2013 by Wine Spectator, and being the only Australian wine to receive a double 100 point (for the 2008 Grange).
