For over four generations, the Catena family has cultivated vines in the Andes Mountains foothills of Mendoza, Argentina. Driven by the ambition to craft wines rivaling the world’s finest, Nicolás Catena meticulously identified prime lots and rows within the family’s estate vineyards.

Situated nearly 5,000 feet above sea level in the Gualtallary sub-district of Tupungato, the Adrianna vineyard is home to the White Bones Chardonnay, sourced from specific rows within Block 1. This designation derives from the unique soil composition beneath these rows, characterized by layers of calcareous deposits, limestone, and fossilized animal bones, remnants of an ancient river that once flowed through the area.

Numerous theories abound regarding the distinctive floral aromatics and earthy minerality found in the grapes from these rows. It’s speculated that the phenomenon may stem from the soil’s mineral content or the influence of calcareous deposits on root development.

At this lofty elevation, nights are refreshingly cool, with temperatures only slightly above freezing, even during the summer months. The diurnal temperature variation ranges from 15 to 20 degrees, while the heightened altitude intensifies sunlight exposure.

2020 Vintage

The White Bones 2020 presents a pale wine with a golden hue. The nose is an intricate tapestry of aromas, unveiling layers of white flowers, citrus blossoms, and subtle hints of tropical fruits. Delicate notes of almond and a touch of minerality add further nuance to the aromatic profile.

On the palate, this Chardonnay exhibits a remarkable balance between opulence and precision. Flavours of crisp green apple, Meyer lemon, and white peach dance on the palate, underscored by a vibrant acidity that imparts freshness and vitality. The judicious use of French oak barrels contributes a subtle creaminess and notes of vanilla, seamlessly integrated to enhance the wine’s overall complexity.

The White Bones 2020 is characterised by a pronounced minerality, a hallmark of the calcareous soils from which it originates. The texture is silky, and the finish is persistent, leaving a lingering impression that invites contemplation. 2020 is considered an extremely good vintage.

2021 Vintage

The growing season of 2021 vintage presented challenges, characterised by higher levels of rainfall and cooler temperatures than usual, resulting in slightly lower alcohol levels in the wines. These cool and damp conditions extended into the summer months, following significant spring frosts that significantly reduced yields.

Despite these conditions, this wine is endowed with fine aromatics, refreshing acidity, and an overall sense of elegance.
