The 1970s era, known for disco and vibrant culture, marked the inception of Jim Barry Wine’s Watervale Riesling in Clare Valley. To commemorate this milestone, the family-owned winery has adorned their popular wine with a groovy 70s-inspired label, paying tribute to its birth year of 1974.
“Since our winery’s establishment in 1974, Watervale Riesling has been a staple in our collection, consistently produced every vintage,” Sales and Marketing Director, Sam Barry remarked. “Its enduring success lies in its unwavering quality and reliability; consumers know they can expect excellence with every bottle. In 2022, Jim Barry Wines received the prestigious Wolf Blass AM BVK Award at the Canberra International Riesling Challenge, recognising their significant contributions to the promotion and development of Riesling worldwide.
Situated just fifteen kilometers south of Clare township, the quaint village of Watervale lies nestled in South Australia’s Clare Valley. It has garnered international acclaim for the exceptional quality of its Rieslings.
Third-generation winemaker, Tom Barry, highlighted the evolution of the wine’s style while maintaining fruit quality over the decades. He anticipates that consumers will embrace the funky new label, reflecting the vibrancy of its era. “The fruit for this wine originally came from my grandparents’ property in Watervale,” Tom explained. “With the acquisition of the historic Florita vineyard in 1986, production significantly expanded.”
Tom also noted adjustments in sugar levels and advancements in winemaking technology over the years to meet customer preferences.
This is a wine with enticing aromas of lemon, grapefruit juice, lime, and white flowers, complemented by subtle hints of mineral and wet slate. Refreshing and intense on the palate, this wine exhibits the hallmark characteristics of Watervale Riesling. The vibrant fruit flavours are perfectly balanced by lively acidity.
