Quinta dos Murças is located in northern Portugal, nestled between the Baixo and Cima-Corgo sub-regions on the right bank of the river. The estate is distinguished by its 8 diverse terroirs, characterised by varying altitudes, exposures, schist soils, and vertical vineyards. In 1947, it became a pioneer by planting the first vertical vineyard in the Douro region. The Minas vertical and horizontal vineyards, situated at altitudes between 110m (360 ft) and 300m (985 ft), are south-facing and benefit from five natural springs (called minas) that help cool the area and influence the terroir. These vineyards, planted between 1987 and 2011, thrive on weathered schist and sandstone soils.
This wine is crafted from Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Francisca, and Tinta Roriz grapes. The grapes are hand-picked, destemmed, crushed, and fermented with indigenous yeasts at a controlled temperature (25ºC – 28ºC) in granite ‘lagares’. They are foot-trodden and pressed using a traditional vertical press. Following fermentation, the wine is aged for 9 months in concrete vats and used French oak casks.
The wine has an intense and lively nose, dominated by ripe red fruit, floral, and balsamic aromas. On the palate, it is fresh and vibrant with firm, ripe tannins and well-integrated acidity. The finish is long and lingering, offering a harmonious balance of freshness and ripeness.
Food pairing suggestion: Espetada – grilled Portuguese-style skewered beef.
