Tikves is one of the best producers we tasted so far from The Republic of Macedonia with their wines centring on the indigenous grapes, Smederevka, Vranec and Kratoshija.

The producer has a state-of-the-art winery, helping the winemaking team eke out every last ounce of flavour from the grapes. The wines are overseen by consultant oenologist Philippe Cambie who has helped the winery win numerous awards for their wines. The wine spends 18 months maturing in French oak lending the wine its subtle toasty character. The Kratoshija component of the wine gives red berry fruit notes as it is actually genetically related to the Italian Primitivo grape. The Vranec component brings structure, depth of colour and notes of strawberry and cocoa.

Food pairing suggestion: the Barovo works very well alongside a slow-cooked lamb shank or shin of beef casserole.

Did you know? We are often excited to taste wines from this part of the world, especially when producers champion their indigenous grapes in such a compelling fashion. The Tikves winery was founded in 1885 and more recently has benefited from massive amounts of investment (30 million euros) since 2003. This enabled the winery to overhaul the technological side of the operation and in turn, improve the quality of everything the winery produces.

  1. Joanne

    Smooth and rich🤩 perfect taste

  2. I. J.

It is one of those lovely reds that I can just sit and smell instead of drinking. Dried fruits, chocolate and maybe even a bit of anise. Nice tannins, nice complexity, and great earthy finish. I would love to know what this tastes like after a few years. I really like this wine.

  3. Nick

I recently tried this Barovo red wine and was pleasantly surprised by its rich, bold flavor. The wine has a smooth finish and pairs well with a variety of meats and cheeses. A great value for the price, it’s definitely a staple in my wine fridge now.
