The town of Tobermory was established in 1788, strategically located due to its ideal setting. The name “Tobermory” comes from the Gaelic ‘tobar mhoire’, meaning ‘well of Mary,’ which refers to the well and chapel of St. Mary built for the community. Tobermory Distillery, founded in 1798 by local merchant John Sinclair after initially being refused permission the previous year, is one of Scotland’s oldest operational malt whisky distilleries, celebrating its 200th anniversary in 1998.
Launched in 2019, this whisky marks a significant moment for Tobermory as it takes the spotlight in the distillery’s new core range. The release followed a two-year hiatus during which the distillery underwent extensive refurbishments. The new bottlings, including the Tobermory 12 Year Old, are inspired by the vibrant colors of the Isle of Mull, reflecting the distillery’s deep connection to its Hebridean home.
Tobermory 12 Year Old is a distinguished single malt Scotch whisky that is matured exclusively in ex-bourbon casks, which imparts a vibrant, fruity, and spicy character with a subtle, salty edge. On the nose, it reveals sweet, honeyed aromas of vanilla, ripe oranges, and delicate flowers. The palate offers a lively mix of fresh citrus, apples, and tropical fruits, followed by creamy toffee, floral honey, and a hint of salty undercurrent that adds depth to the experience.
