Producer – Paul Cluver Family Wines
Paul Cluver Family Wines is one of South Africa’s benchmark cool-climate producers and has played a pivotal role in establishing the Elgin Valley as one of the country’s finest wine regions. Although the Cluver family has farmed the land for generations, vineyards were first planted in the late 1980s after recognising the exceptional potential of Elgin’s cool growing conditions for Burgundian varieties. Today, the estate is internationally recognised for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, consistently producing wines that rival examples from much more famous regions.
Sustainability lies at the heart of everything the family does. The vineyards are surrounded by indigenous fynbos and protected forests, while careful environmental stewardship ensures that the estate remains one of South Africa’s most respected conservation success stories. The Village range takes inspiration from Burgundy’s village-level wines, aiming to produce approachable bottlings that express varietal purity and the unique personality of Elgin while remaining ready to enjoy upon release.
Paul Cluver Village Pinot Noir, Terroir & Winemaking
Elgin enjoys one of the coolest climates in South Africa, with vineyards sitting between 280 and 400 metres above sea level. Warm summer days are followed by cool evenings, allowing Pinot Noir to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic precision. The vineyards are planted predominantly on decomposed Bokkeveld shale with clay-rich subsoils, providing excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture to sustain the vines during the growing season.
For the Village Pinot Noir, Paul Cluver selects younger vineyard parcels, whose fruit naturally shows brighter aromatics and more immediate charm. Individual berries are hand sorted before destemming without crushing, followed by a five to six-day cold maceration to gently extract colour and flavour. Fermentation takes place using a combination of native and selected Burgundian yeasts before the wine matures for around 10 months in older French oak barrels and large wooden vats. The restrained use of oak preserves the wine’s vibrant fruit while adding subtle texture and silky complexity.
Paul Cluver Village Pinot Noir, Tasting Notes
Bright garnet in colour, the nose bursts with red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry, complemented by hints of cranberry, gentle spice and delicate savoury notes. The palate is silky and medium-bodied, offering juicy flavours of ripe cherries, poached plum and red berries, supported by refreshing acidity and beautifully soft tannins. Subtle earthy nuances and a whisper of oak add complexity before a long, elegant finish that leaves the palate fresh and wanting another sip.
