Hundred Hills Wine
Hundred Hills is an English sparkling wine producer located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. Their vineyards cover approximately 60 acres of prime chalk soil, which is ideal for growing the classic Champagne grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
All of Hundred Hills’ wines carry freshness, intensity, and vivacity. Each wine has its own style and personality, from bright and exuberant rosés to rich and decadent cuvées. If you appreciate elegance, freshness, and a touch of magic, Hundred Hills is worth exploring!
The winery was called “Hundred Hills” because it is located in the ancient Pyrton Hundred, a historic administrative area in England. The name reflects the historical context of the region being one of the “Hundreds” mentioned in the Doomsday Book, meaning an area that could raise 100 men for the king.
Hundred Hills Location
Founders, Stephen and Fiona Duckett, conducted a meticulous search for the perfect site to make sparkling wine, leading them to ten parcels of steep chalk slopes in Oxfordshire. They analyzed the soil in 100 sites with the help of the Comité Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne (CIVC) labs to ensure the land was ideal for viticulture!
The specific plot of land was chosen due to its ideal terroir for viticulture, particularly for chardonnays and pinots. The chalky soils, which drain well and retain warmth, combined with the sheltered dry valley and sloping topography, protect the vines from frosts and winds. Additionally, the climate of the area has become similar to that of Champagne forty years ago, making it perfect for growing grapes for fine sparkling wines!
