About Our Masterclasses

Shake up your afternoon with Loki’s Cocktail Masterclasses, hosted by Carl Hawkins of Amuse Booze. Carl is a familiar face on Birmingham’s drinks scene, known for lively tastings that bring together excellent drinks, entertaining stories and a little hands-on experimentation.

Carl is also known as The Gintleman. Back in 2009, he created Birmingham’s Jekyll & Hyde, a gin bar that opened with 40 varieties. His interests now stretch well beyond gin: our Amuse Booze events explore everything from rum and spritzes to cocktail making, with a different theme to discover each time.

The events take place mainly at our Great Western Arcade store in Birmingham city centre, usually on a Saturday afternoon. Browse the dates below to see what’s coming up; each event page tells you more about the drinks and what to expect.

Example Event

Ready, Steady, Shake

Ready, Steady, Shake by Amuse Booze is a hands-on cocktail masterclass inspired by the spirit of the classic teatime cooking show — only this time, the ingredients are spirits, mixers, garnishes and ice.

Rather than being handed four finished cocktails, you’ll build them yourself.

Each round will focus on a different style, technique or flavour challenge, giving you the chance to put what you’ve learned into practice as the session develops.

During the event you will:

  • Create and enjoy your own four-course cocktail menu.
  • Learn to balance sweet, sour, bitter, strong and refreshing flavours.
  • Try shaking and stirring, and find out when each technique works best.
  • Explore how spirits, mixers and other ingredients work together.
  • Discover how temperature, dilution and texture change a drink.
  • Experiment with flavour combinations, garnishes and presentation.
  • Taste and fine-tune your cocktails with expert guidance.
  • Leave with practical skills and ideas to try at home.
