This is a very limited release with only a tiny number of bottles available. The first edition sold out almost instantly, and demand for this follow-up is already high. If you want a bottle, don’t wait: once it’s gone, it’s gone.
WMD Single Malt Rowielia, The Distillery
West Midlands Distillery was founded in 2017 by a family of distillers with a clear vision: to craft an authentic single-malt whisky that celebrated the industrial and mining heritage of the Black Country and Birmingham. Based in the heart of England, the distillery uses four copper pot stills (Doris, Lenny, Patricia and Sharon) named in tribute to family members and designed to create spirited, fruit-forward whisky with true regional identity. Rowielia pays homage to the Anglo-Saxon origins of Rowley Regis, the very place this whisky is crafted. With each release, the team honours the “coal, wood and Rowley Rag stone” that made the region famous, marrying heritage, place and craft in every bottle.
WMD Single Malt Rowielia, Production Method
Rowielia is a limited-edition release born from two single casks of lightly-peated malt, matured carefully before bottling at 51.6% ABV. The 2024 edition comes from the second release of the distillery, following their sell-out debut in 2023. The influence of local heritage runs deep: the mineral footprint of Rowley Rag stone, the subtle peat smoke referencing the region’s coal past, and the wood ageing that brings warmth and character. This is small-batch whisky made with intention and identity: each cask selected to reflect West Midlands Distillery’s ambition to create England’s Midlands-born single malt.
WMD Single Malt Rowielia, Tasting Notes
In the glass, Rowielia reveals a deep amber hue with hints of copper. On the nose, expect rich aromas of dark fruit — plums, cherries — mingled with a subtle peat smoke, tobacco leaf and wood spice. The palate is bold yet balanced: blackcurrant and redcurrant fruit underpin liquorice, vanilla and warming cinnamon, with a brambly edge that nods to the wild landscape of the Black Country. A lingering finish brings dry stone, peat-dust grains and gentle oak fade-out. The result is a whisky that combines power and polish with unmistakable sense of place.
Suggested Pairing: Try with smoked duck breast and cherry-glaze, aged cheddar with dark rye, or a rich chocolate & hazelnut tart: the fruit-smoke-spice interplay of Rowielia elevates bold flavours beautifully.
