WMD Single Malt Albion, The Distillery

Founded in 2017 by a family of passionate distillers, West Midlands Distillery began producing gin, rum, and vodka before pursuing their long-term ambition of creating the region’s first single malt whisky. Their whisky programme officially began in 2021, with a strong focus on single-cask maturation, heritage barley varieties, and innovative fermentation techniques. In 2025, the distillery released its inaugural whisky collection, marking a major milestone for English whisky and establishing the West Midlands as an emerging whisky region.

WMD Single Malt Albion, Production Method

Albion is produced using carefully selected heritage barley strains and long fermentations designed to build depth, fruit character, and texture. Distilled in traditional copper pot stills, only the pure heart of the spirit is retained before maturation in first-fill oak casks. The distillery’s small-scale, single-barrel philosophy allows each release to develop its own distinctive identity while maintaining the rich, fruit-forward house style that defines the distillery.

Warm aromas of vanilla custard, caramel, dried fruit, and baking spice rise from the glass, followed by hints of orchard fruit and toasted oak. The palate is rich and silky, layering notes of toffee, honey, dark fruit, and gentle spice with subtle smoky undertones. Despite its strength, the texture remains remarkably smooth and balanced, leading to a long, warming finish filled with soft oak, candied fruit, and lingering sweetness.

Albion’ is the earliest known name for England and the Islands of Great Britain. Derived from the Latin word “albus” meaning white, likely referencing the white cliffs of Dover, the first thing ancient travellers to the Island would have been greeted with.
