Uruguay may be one of South America’s smaller wine-producing countries, but it is rapidly gaining recognition for wines of remarkable freshness, character and individuality. At the heart of that story is Pisano, a family estate whose roots stretch back to 1914, when Italian immigrant Don Césare Secundino Pisano settled in Progreso and planted the family’s first vineyards. More than a century later, Pisano remains proudly family-run and has become one of the country’s most distinctive producers.

Located around 45 minutes inland from Montevideo and just 20 kilometres from the Río de la Plata estuary, Pisano’s vineyards are profoundly influenced by the nearby Atlantic. Rather than relying on altitude for freshness, as many South American regions do, the vineyards benefit from cooling ocean winds and the Falklands current. From these dry-farmed vineyards, the family produces Tannat with aromatic precision and fine tannins alongside wonderfully fresh, saline Albariño. Today, brothers Eduardo, Gustavo and Daniel Pisano oversee the vineyards, winemaking and commercial side of the estate.

Join us for an evening hosted by Nikolas ‘Niko’ Kozik, who lives alongside the Pisano estate and has become an extended part of the winemaking family. Knowledgeable, energetic and passionate about sharing the wines of his home country, Niko has hosted everything from major trade tastings to intimate consumer events. His philosophy is refreshingly straightforward: he simply wants to see people enjoying wine from Uruguay.

Over two relaxed hours at Loki Edgbaston, you’ll taste eight wines showcasing just how diverse modern Uruguay can be. Starting with sparkling and still Albariño before moving through Pinot Noir and four increasingly serious expressions of Tannat, this is an opportunity to discover an exciting wine country through one of its most characterful family estates.
