Part Twelve of our 12-part masterclass: The Great Wine Regions Series, Australia, New Zealand & South Africa, Innovation, Ancient Soils, and Climate
For our 12-part Great Wine Regions Series, we travel across the Southern Hemisphere to three countries that have transformed the modern wine world: Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
About the Masterclass

Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa are not a footnote to the Old-World story, they are one of the reasons that story had to be rewritten. From the maritime precision of Marlborough and Central Otago to the heat and scale of Australia’s inland regions, and the ancient, weathered soils of the Cape, the Southern Hemisphere offers a version of quality that owes nothing to imitation.
This structured three-hour session blends guided tasting with deep-dive learning into how ocean currents, altitude, and latitude shape three of the world’s most dynamic wine-producing nations. With Radu’s guidance, you’ll apply the tasting technique built across the whole series to close out your twelve-part education and finish with one wine poured entirely blind.
What to Expect
- Taste 8 wines showcasing key styles from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa
- Understand how ocean currents and coastal winds — the Benguela Current, the Cape Doctor shape these vineyards
- Explore how New Zealand evolved beyond Sauvignon Blanc into world-class Pinot Noir
- Discover South Africa’s old-vine Chenin Blanc, and its structured, age-worthy reds
- Taste one of Australia’s most distinctive and underrated whites alongside its old bush-vine reds
- Develop tasting skills focusing on fruit ripeness, structural balance, and climate indicators
- Finish the series with a blind tasting instead of a quiz: one additional Southern Hemisphere wine, not featured in tonight’s flight, poured with no label. Identify it correctly and the bottle is yours
- Round off twelve parts of the series with a toast, and a look ahead to what’s next
Wines you may try
- New Zealand — Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
- New Zealand — Central Otago Pinot Noir
- New Zealand — a Hawke’s Bay red (Bordeaux-style blend or Syrah)

- None of this is locked, it’s a shape for the session, not an order sheet. The bonus blind wine should stay within this same theme (Southern Hemisphere).
