Pol Roger Champagne: Churchill’s Favourite Champagne House

Pol Roger Brut Réserve NV is one of those Champagnes that feels instantly special. Rich, generous and beautifully polished, it has that classic Pol Roger opulence, but with a wonderfully crisp, dry finish that keeps everything elegant rather than heavy. It is a Champagne made for celebrations, of course, but it is also far too enjoyable to save only for grand occasions.

Pol Roger is famously associated with Sir Winston Churchill, who adored the house’s Champagnes. That long-standing connection is still part of its charm today, especially in the UK, where Pol Roger remains a firm favourite for those who enjoy a fuller, more developed style of Champagne. It was also served at the wedding of William and Kate, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, which tells you plenty about its reputation for proper occasion-worthy fizz.

The secret to Pol Roger Brut Réserve lies in its beautifully balanced blend. It brings together the three classic Champagne grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, sourced from 30 different crus. Pinot Noir gives structure and power, Pinot Meunier brings freshness and rounded fruit, while Chardonnay adds finesse, lift and aromatic detail. Around 25% reserve wines are included for extra depth and consistency, helping Pol Roger achieve that dependable house style year after year.

The winemaking is careful and traditional. The grapes are gently pressed, the juice is settled, and fermentation takes place at low temperatures in stainless steel vats. The wines go through malolactic fermentation, before secondary fermentation and maturation in Pol Roger’s deep cellars, 33 metres below street level. The Champagne is then traditionally hand-riddled and finished with dosage. The result is a Champagne with richness, precision and a beautifully fine mousse.

In the glass, Pol Roger Brut Réserve has a golden straw colour and a stream of fine, persistent bubbles. The nose opens with ripe pear and mango, followed by honeysuckle, white jasmine, vanilla and warm brioche. On the palate, it is generous and rounded, with flavours of quince jelly, apricot jam, acacia honey and a gentle beeswax note. It finishes long, dry and fresh, with a lovely mix of fruit, spice and toasted complexity.

Pol Roger Champagne Food Pairing Suggestion:

Pol Roger Brut Réserve NV is a superb aperitif, but it has enough body and structure to work beautifully with food too. Try it with fish and chips for a very British pairing, where the Champagne’s freshness cuts through the crisp batter and salty richness. It is also excellent with smoked salmon, roast chicken, creamy seafood dishes, or even gently spiced dishes where the fruit and mousse bring everything into balance.
