IDDA — meaning “she” in Sicilian dialect, referring to Mount Etna herself — is a collaboration between two powerhouses: Angelo Gaja, the legendary Barbaresco producer, and Alberto Graci, a native of Sicily’s Etna region. Together, they’ve created a project that fuses Gaja’s precision with Etna’s wild, untamed energy. The IDDA estate encompasses vineyards in Belpasso and Biancavilla on Etna’s southern slopes, producing wines that express the mountain’s raw volcanic character. IDDA Bianco is crafted from Carricante — Etna’s noble white grape — resulting in a wine that is both vibrant and textural, with the tension and minerality that defines Etna’s best whites.
The vineyards lie at elevations between 600–800 metres, planted on ancient lava flows with volcanic ash and basalt-rich soils. These high-altitude sites benefit from warm days and cool, breezy nights, allowing Carricante to ripen slowly while maintaining piercing acidity and aromatic complexity.
The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to preserve freshness. Ageing takes place in a combination of steel and large oak casks, on fine lees for several months to build texture and depth, but without imparting overt oak flavour. The result is a wine of saline precision, with an almost Alpine clarity.
Pale straw with greenish reflections. The nose is immediately expressive: lemon zest, white peach, green apple, and delicate floral notes of acacia and wild herbs. There’s a distinct volcanic signature — smoky flint, saline breeze, and a subtle earthy undertone. On the palate, it’s sleek and linear, yet creamy in texture, with flavours of grapefruit, ripe pear, and a tangy, mouth-watering mineral finish. A white that feels sculpted by the mountain itself.
