Kuzubağ Karası Kalecik, Producer
Kuzubağ is one of the rising stars of Turkish boutique winemaking, based in the rugged, high-altitude slopes of Denizli in the country’s southwest. The estate focuses on crafting terroir-led wines from both indigenous and international varieties, with a particular passion for resurrecting historic Anatolian grapes. Their philosophy centres on precision farming, careful clonal selection, and minimal intervention in the cellar — all with the aim of letting native varieties speak with clarity. Karası is Kuzubağ’s expression of Kalecik Karası, one of Turkey’s most charming and aromatic red grapes, traditionally grown in the Kalecik district near Ankara but now thriving in several mountainous regions thanks to thoughtful, modern viticulture.
Kuzubağ Karası Kalecik, Terroir & Winemaking
The vineyards sit on elevated, sun-drenched slopes with strong diurnal temperature shifts: warm, bright days followed by notably cool nights. This climate preserves acidity, intensifies aromatics, and keeps the natural delicacy of Kalecik Karası intact. The soils mix limestone, clay and fractured rock, contributing lift and a mineral edge to the wine. Grapes are harvested early in the morning to retain freshness, then gently fermented at cool temperatures to protect the grape’s naturally perfumed profile. Ageing is typically brief and minimal, avoiding heavy oak so the variety’s vibrant fruit, floral elegance and soft tannins remain centre stage.
Kuzubağ Karası Kalecik, Tasting Notes
Kuzubağ Karası Kalecik opens with a beautifully perfumed nose: think wild strawberry, raspberry, pomegranate, rose petals and a touch of redcurrant. Light to medium-bodied, silky and incredibly drinkable, the palate shows pure red fruit, soft spice and a whisper of dried herbs. The tannins are feather-light and supple, supported by lively acidity that keeps everything bright and lifted. The finish is clean, juicy and subtly floral, making it an effortlessly charming red with real Anatolian personality.
Food Pairing Suggestion
Perfect with grilled halloumi, lamb köfte, meze spreads, tomato-rich dishes, or roasted aubergine with yoghurt and pomegranate.
