The Great Wine Regions Series – Part 6: Portugal
April 25 @ 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm
£60.00

Part Six of our 12-part masterclass: The Great Wine Regions Series
Portugal is one of the most exciting wine countries in Europe right now. Not just for Port, but for fresh Atlantic whites, structured reds, and an extraordinary range of indigenous grape varieties you rarely see elsewhere. From the steep schist terraces of the Douro to the crisp coastline of Vinho Verde and the granite influence of Dao, Portugal offers serious quality and character at every level.
Led by Radu Vasile, our in-house wine educator, this masterclass gives you a clear, structured understanding of Portugal’s key regions, grapes, and styles. Expect practical comparisons, confident tasting guidance, and a much stronger sense of what to look for when buying and drinking Portuguese wines.
About the Masterclass
This structured three-hour session blends guided tasting with deep-dive learning into Portugal’s geography, grape varieties, and winemaking culture. You’ll explore how Atlantic vs inland climates shape freshness and ripeness, how schist and granite influence texture and aroma, and why Portugal remains a world leader in field blends and native varieties.
With Radu’s guidance, you’ll develop a stronger tasting framework for Portuguese wines, learning how to assess acidity, tannin style, alcohol balance, and regional signatures.
What to Expect
- Taste 8 wines spanning Portugal’s key regions (such as Vinho Verde, Douro, Dao, Bairrada, Alentejo, and a classic fortified style)

- Understand Portugal’s most important grapes (including Alvarinho, Arinto, Touriga Nacional and more)
- Compare Atlantic freshness vs inland power and how climate shifts the final style
- Explore traditional field blends vs modern single-variety expressions
- Learn the basics of Portuguese labeling (DOC/IGP) and what it tells you about origin and style
- Develop tasting skills focusing on structure, balance, tannin quality, and aromatic identity
- End with a fun, informal quiz – the winner takes home a bottle of wine!
