Domaine Joël Delaunay is a family-owned estate located in the heart of the Loire Valley, near the Cher River. Established in 1965, the estate is now managed by Thierry and Marie Delaunay, representing the fifth generation of winemakers in the family. With a vineyard spanning approximately 40 hectares, the domaine emphasizes sustainable viticulture practices and a commitment to expressing the unique characteristics of their terroir. Notably, 90% of their production focuses on white wines, predominantly Sauvignon Blanc, showcasing their dedication to this varietal.
Terroir & Winemaking
The vineyards are situated in the Touraine appellation, characterized by its diverse soils and favorable climate. The region’s soils, comprising a mix of clay, limestone, and flint, contribute to the mineral complexity of the wines. The cool climate, influenced by the nearby Cher River, allows for a slow and even ripening of the grapes, preserving their natural acidity and aromatic intensity.
In the winery, the Sauvignon Blanc grapes undergo a short, cold maceration on the skins to enhance their natural aromatics. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, preserving the freshness and purity of the fruit. The wine is then aged on fine lees, adding texture and complexity to the final product.
Tasting Notes
This Sauvignon Blanc exhibits a pale lemon hue and offers a powerful, expressive nose with notes of exotic fruits, blackcurrant buds, grapefruit, peach, and floral undertones. On the palate, it is well-balanced, long, and rich, with a seductive freshness and fruitiness. The wine’s vibrant acidity and mineral backbone make it an excellent representation of the Touraine terroir. It pairs beautifully with seafood, oysters, and other shellfish, or can be enjoyed as an aperitif.
