Richard Kershaw MW’s wines are being produced in small quantities and are constantly in high demand. He is one of the few Masters of Wine to produce his own wine. Richard, a Sheffield native, studied and practised cooking before becoming interested in wine. He moved to South Africa in 1999 after a period of significant travel, and by 2009 he was the group winemaker at Mulderbosch and Kanu. In 2012, he founded Richard Kershaw Wines, specialising in Elgin’s cool-climate wines. He uses his extensive knowledge to create exquisite wines that sit alongside some of the top wines in the world.
11 vineyards owned by Richard are only tiny and produce very small amounts. Elgin has the coolest climate in South Africa, making it perfect for growing Pinot Noir. Another benefit of a cooler climate is that the grapes develop complex characteristics as grape clusters are intact with their roots longer. The fruit ripens more gradually and with lower sugar levels (and, therefore, lower alcohol).
Kershaw Clonal Selection Pinot Noir 2018 is characterised by its purity of fruit, freshness, and complexity at the same time. The juice is matured in old oak for under a year, softening the tannin. The wine is bursting with aromas of black cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, and thyme and is balanced with vibrant acidity.
