Pio Cesare is one of Piemonte’s most iconic family-run estates, crafting traditional Barolo and Barbaresco since 1881. Now in its fifth generation, the Cesare family continues to honour their founder’s vision: producing structured, long-lived wines that faithfully reflect their vineyard origins. With holdings in some of Barbaresco’s top crus, including Treiso and San Rocco Seno d’Elvio, Pio Cesare’s Barbaresco DOCG is a benchmark wine — elegant, complex, and built for both early charm and long-term cellaring.
Sourced from estate-owned vineyards in Barbaresco and neighbouring Treiso, where limestone and clay-rich soils and high-altitude slopes provide Nebbiolo with finesse and aromatic purity. These are some of the cooler, breezier sites in Barbaresco, which contribute to the wine’s elegance and subtlety.
Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel, with maceration on the skins for 20–25 days to extract fine tannins and depth. The wine is then aged for 30 months in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks (for structure and longevity) and a small percentage in French barriques (for integration and finesse).
Deep garnet with brick nuances at the rim. The nose is captivating: rose petals, dried cherries, violets, and sweet tobacco, layered with hints of liquorice, anise, and cedar. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied but densely structured, with ripe red berries, subtle earthiness, and a mineral streak. Tannins are firm yet fine, with lively acidity leading to a long, balsamic-tinged finish. Youthful now, but will evolve gracefully over the next decade.
Food pairing suggestion: Wild Mushroom & Truffle Tagliatelle.
