In 2020, Payten & Jones released a wine aptly named “F\*\*\* 2020,” believing nothing could top the chaos of that year. Then came 2021, bringing fresh challenges in Victoria, inspiring the equally frank “2021 Shit Show.” Just as they thought it couldn’t get worse, 2022 arrived – with the threat of nuclear conflict, soaring inflation, and rising living costs – and, well… the name says it all.
Payten & Jones FFS Yarra Valley Mataro, Producer
Payten and Jones are a dynamic winemaking duo from Victoria’s Yarra Valley, celebrated for their minimal-intervention style and focus on honest, expressive wines. Their Mataro showcases the variety’s wild, savoury side, crafted with a natural, hands-off approach.
Payten & Jones FFS Yarra Valley Mataro, Terroir & Winemaking
Sourced from low-yielding vines on sandy loam soils, the fruit is handpicked and fermented with indigenous yeasts. Whole-bunch inclusion adds complexity and structure, while maturation in old French oak preserves freshness and varietal character. The result is a wine that’s bold yet balanced, with a raw, authentic charm.
Payten & Jones FFS Yarra Valley Mataro 2022, Tasting Notes
Aromas of blackberry, black olive, and cracked pepper lead to a palate of dark plum, game, and earthy spice. The tannins are firm yet ripe, giving the wine excellent food-pairing potential. A long, savoury finish carries hints of dried herbs and leather.
