Fairview Chenin Blanc, Producer
Fairview, based in Paarl, is one of South Africa’s most iconic wine estates. Established in 1693, it has been home to the Back family since 1937. Today, Charles Back leads the estate. He is known as a pioneer who introduced Rhône varietals to the Cape and promoted sustainable farming. Fairview is also famous for its goats, which inspired the playful “Goats do Roam” wines. Alongside these, the winery produces terroir-focused bottlings, and Chenin Blanc is a key focus.
Fairview Chenin Blanc, Terroir & Winemaking
The grapes come from old bush vines in Paarl and cooler vineyards in Swartland. This combination brings both richness and freshness. The bush vines grow on decomposed granite soils, which limit yields and concentrate flavour. Workers hand-pick the grapes in the cool of the morning to protect acidity. In the cellar, most of the juice ferments in stainless steel at cool temperatures. A smaller portion ferments in older oak barrels, which adds subtle texture. After fermentation, the wine rests on fine lees for several months. This process builds mouthfeel and extra complexity.
Fairview Chenin Blanc, Tasting Notes
The nose is aromatic, with ripe quince, peach, and baked apple. Honeysuckle and citrus blossom add a floral lift. The palate is medium-bodied and layered. Juicy stone fruit and pear combine with hints of honey and mineral notes. Bright acidity gives the wine energy, while lees ageing adds gentle creaminess. The finish is clean and long, with flavours of nectarine and lemon zest.
Food pairing suggestion: Thai Green Curry with Prawns.
