A rare opportunity for collectors and fine wine enthusiasts, Bollinger La Côte aux Enfants Coteaux Champenois 2019 represents one of the most exclusive releases from the house of Bollinger. Produced in very small quantities, this still red wine from Champagne’s legendary slope offers a glimpse into the region’s original winemaking heritage.
Bollinger La Cote Aux Enfants Coteaux Champenois, Producer
Champagne Bollinger, founded in 1829 in Aÿ, is one of the few great Champagne houses that remains family-owned and fiercely independent. Known for its deep-rooted devotion to Pinot Noir and traditional craftsmanship, Bollinger has long been synonymous with power, precision, and elegance. Its vineyards cover 180 hectares, 85% of which are classified as Grand or Premier Cru — an exceptional proportion that allows the house to maintain full control over the quality of its wines. With a Royal Warrant held since 1884 and global acclaim for both its Champagnes and still wines, Bollinger continues to embody the essence of artisanal luxury.
Bollinger La Cote Aux Enfants Coteaux Champenois, Terroir
Nestled on the steep slopes of Aÿ, La Côte aux Enfants is a four-hectare monopole that holds a near-mythic status in Champagne. Reassembled by Jacques Bollinger between 1926 and 1934 from over 50 tiny parcels, the site has two distinct slopes: the north-west, used in the blend of La Grande Année Rosé, and the south-facing side, reserved exclusively for the production of this still red wine.
Bollinger La Cote Aux Enfants Coteaux Champenois 2019, Winemaking
The 2019 Coteaux Champenois La Côte aux Enfants is made from 100% Pinot Noir, crafted in a Burgundian style. One third of the grapes undergo whole-bunch fermentation, and the wine is aged in small oak barrels for added structure and depth. Produced only in outstanding vintages, this limited wine reflects both the richness of the year and the meticulous precision of Bollinger’s cellar team.
The 2019 growing season brought both challenges and triumphs: low yields due to spring frost and mildew, followed by a warm summer that ensured concentrated, aromatic fruit with beautiful balance. The result is a wine of rare depth, energy, and harmony — a testament to both the vineyard’s heritage and the vintage’s character.
Bollinger La Cote Aux Enfants Coteaux Champenois 2019, Tasting Notes
A deep garnet hue introduces a nose of dark fruits — Bigarreau cherry, blackberry, and plum — intertwined with notes of liquorice, violet, and sweet spice. The palate is powerful yet refined, offering layers of ripe black fruit, pepper, truffle, and forest floor. Silky tannins and a long, savoury finish complete this expressive, full-bodied wine. With its remarkable concentration and finesse, La Côte aux Enfants 2019 captures the spirit of Pinot Noir from Champagne’s most legendary slope.
Interesting fact:
The vineyard’s name, La Côte aux Enfants — “The Children’s Hill” — is shrouded in legend. Some say it was originally called La Côte aux Enfers (“The Hill from Hell”) due to the backbreaking labour of carrying soil up its steep slopes; others believe the name refers to the agility of children needed to harvest it. Whatever the truth, this fabled vineyard has become one of Champagne’s most iconic sites, bridging the region’s forgotten red-wine heritage with its modern prestige.
