Primitivo di Manduria Riserva 62 Anniversario wine by San Marzano is one of the best examples of Primitivo.
The Primitivo di Manduria DOP, a strip of land between the seas that wash over the Puglia area, is home to the little hamlet of San Marzano. 19 winemakers established Cantine San Marzano in this location, and they were pursuing a dream long before the appellation of origin was established and Primitivo di Manduria gained international recognition.
Since the set up of the Cantine in 1962, the company purchased their own bottling plant, which allowed them to cut the middle man out and establish a direct relationship with the customer. Anniversario 62 is celebrating a year the Cantine San Marzano was founded.
Primitivo is becoming very fashionable and this bottle is THE example of the grape variety (in fact, it has been used on Master of Wine tastings). Very big and bold, it’s aged in barriques for 18 months, expressing the richness and strength of the Primitivo grapes. Full of baked plums and blackberries with hints of raisin and sweet spice. The tannins are silky soft and the finish is very long. This top-end Primitivo bursts with baked Morello cherry notes and has a richly textured, full-bodied palate. It does not get much better than this!
Food pairing suggestion: Molasses and rum barbeque pulled pork burgers.
