Quinta da Fonte Souto Tinto

A beautifully fresh high-altitude Alentejo red packed with blackberry and black plum, layered with mountain herbs, liquorice, fine tannins and stony depth.

Categories: ,

Quinta da Fonte Souto Tinto shows a very different side of Alentejo. Rather than the broad, sun-baked richness often associated with southern Portugal, this high-altitude red from Portalegre combines concentrated black fruit with remarkable freshness and a distinctly savoury, mineral character. Alicante Bouschet forms the backbone of the blend, bringing blackberry, black plum and depth of colour, while other traditional and international varieties contribute perfume, spice and complexity. The nose moves from ripe forest fruits into rosemary, pine needles, liquorice and subtle balsamic notes, while the palate is structured by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. Partial maturation in seasoned French oak rounds the texture without overwhelming the fruit. Rich enough for slow-cooked meat but far from heavy, this is a polished, gastronomic Alentejo red shaped as much by mountains, granite and cool nights as by Portuguese sunshine.

Quinta da Fonte Souto Tinto, Producer

Quinta da Fonte Souto belongs to Symington Family Estates, the historic Portuguese wine family best known for its long association with the Douro and Port houses including Graham’s, Dow’s and Warre’s.

The estate marked an important departure for the family when it was acquired in 2017: Fonte Souto became the Symingtons’ first vineyard property outside the Douro. It lies in the Portalegre subregion of Alto Alentejo, on the slopes of the Serra de São Mamede, and the first wines produced under Symington ownership were released in 2019.

The property covers 207 hectares, but only around 43 hectares are planted with vines. A further 100 hectares are forested, including extensive cork-oak woodland and the chestnut groves that gave the estate its name: in Portuguese, a souto is an area planted with chestnut trees.

Quinta da Fonte Souto Tinto, Terroir & Winemaking

Fonte Souto sits between approximately 490 and 550 metres above sea level on the slopes of the Serra de São Mamede. The elevation makes Portalegre noticeably cooler and wetter than much of the surrounding Alentejo, with Atlantic influences meeting the region’s Mediterranean climate. Hot days are followed by significantly cooler nights, helping the grapes retain acidity while developing ripe flavour.

The soils are dominated by granite and schist and are relatively infertile, naturally limiting yields. Mature, low-yielding vines give the wine concentration, but the altitude provides the freshness and tension that define the Fonte Souto style.

The blend varies by release but is built around Alicante Bouschet, with grapes such as Syrah, Alfrocheiro, Trincadeira, Cabernet Sauvignon and Touriga Nacional appearing according to the year. The fruit is hand-picked into small containers and manually sorted before destemming and gentle crushing. Individual parcels are fermented separately, with temperature and extraction adjusted according to the character of each batch.

A period of post-fermentation maceration provides additional tannic structure and ageing potential. In recent releases, around half of the final blend has typically spent approximately six to eight months in second- and third-use 400-litre French oak barrels, while the remainder is retained without oak influence. The result is structured and polished without becoming dominated by wood.

Quinta da Fonte Souto Tinto, Tasting Notes

Deep ruby-purple in colour, with the intensity you would expect from Alicante Bouschet. The nose opens with blackberry, black plum and dark forest fruits before revealing pine needles, rosemary, mint and a distinctive balsamic, resinous quality.

There is a lovely savoury streak underneath the fruit, with hints of black olive, liquorice, violet and spice adding complexity as the wine opens.

The palate is rich and concentrated but beautifully controlled. Blackberry and plum are framed by firm, fine-grained tannins, while fresh acidity gives the wine definition and keeps its generous fruit from becoming heavy. Subtle oak contributes texture and gentle spice rather than obvious vanilla.

The finish is long, dry and savoury, with black fruit, liquorice, mountain herbs and a stony mineral quality lingering behind. It is a substantial red, but one whose freshness makes it particularly impressive at the table.

Did you know?

The estate has far more forest than vineyard. Of its 207 hectares, only around 43 are planted with vines, while roughly 100 hectares are woodland. Chestnut trees are especially important to its identity – the Portuguese word souto refers to a chestnut grove and gives Quinta da Fonte Souto its name.
