Domaine Lafage Côté Est, Producer
Domaine Lafage is a family-run estate situated between Perpignan and the Spanish border in the Côtes Catalanes, Roussillon. Managed by Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage since 2001, the domaine traces its winemaking heritage back to 1798. After years of travelling and crafting wines across South America, California, South Africa, and Germany, the couple returned to their native Roussillon, bringing with them a wealth of global experience. Today, they combine traditional craftsmanship with forward-thinking sustainability, championing regenerative agriculture, precise water management, and climate-resilient viticulture. Early harvesting and sensitive winemaking help preserve natural freshness, giving Domaine Lafage wines their hallmark balance, vitality, and Mediterranean elegance.
Domaine Lafage Côté Est, Terroir & Winemaking
The Grenache Noir grapes for Les Sardines come from the foothills of the Pyrenees on the French-Catalan side of Roussillon, an area shaped by dramatic geology and a warm, sun-drenched climate tempered by Mediterranean breezes. The vineyards sit on poor, decomposed slate soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavour. This location, a natural amphitheatre open to the sea, allows for long, even ripening, producing grapes with depth, aromatic intensity, and fresh acidity.
The wine pays homage to the Catalan fishermen who once trawled for sardines just off this coastline, sharing their daily catch, and a friendly glass of wine, at day’s end. That spirit of camaraderie and coastal joie de vivre is captured in every bottle.
After a two-week cool maceration to extract colour and aromatics, fermentation took place under temperature-controlled conditions with selected yeasts. The wine was briefly aged in concrete tanks to preserve its vibrant, fruit-driven style before light fining and bottling.
Domaine Lafage Côté Est, Tasting Notes
Les Sardines is a smooth, expressive Grenache with a joyful Mediterranean personality. Bright aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry mingle with subtle hints of herbs and savoury spice. On the palate, it is fresh, juicy, and supple, with silky tannins framing layers of ripe fruit and a touch of minerality on the finish. Elegant yet easy-drinking, this is a wine that invites relaxed enjoyment and conversation.
Food pairing suggestion: Perfect with grilled sardines, charcuterie and tapas, or a tomato-based pasta. It also shines lightly chilled alongside roast chicken or Mediterranean vegetable dishes.
