A timeless Rioja for colder nights: warming, elegant and beautifully composed. Marqués de Murrieta Reserva is the kind of red that feels instantly reassuring: silky tannins, ripe fruit, savoury spice and just the right amount of oak. A wine that balances tradition and sophistication in perfect harmony.
Marqués de Murrieta Tinto Reserva, Producer
Few estates can claim to define a region the way Marqués de Murrieta defines Rioja. Founded in 1852 by Luciano de Murrieta, it is one of Rioja’s oldest and most influential bodegas, responsible for shaping the classic style of structured, oak-aged Spanish reds that became admired worldwide. Today, the estate is helmed by Vicente D. Cebrián-Sagarriga, who has brought fresh energy while honouring Murrieta’s historic DNA: precision, elegance and long ageing.
The bodega sits within the grand Ygay Estate, a 300-hectare property near Logroño, where all wines are produced exclusively from estate-grown fruit, a rarity in Rioja. The iconic Castillo de Ygay château has been meticulously restored, symbolising the estate’s commitment to both heritage and forward-thinking winemaking. Marqués de Murrieta Reserva represents the house’s signature style: age-worthy yet approachable, traditional yet vibrant, and always meticulously crafted.
Marqués de Murrieta Tinto Reserva, Terroir & Winemaking
The grapes come from selected parcels on the Ygay Estate, located in Rioja Alta at around 500 metres elevation. Clay-limestone soils, cool breezes and significant diurnal range help maintain freshness and aromatic lift: essential for Rioja’s long-aging potential.
The blend is predominantly Tempranillo, supported by Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, each adding lift, colour, spice or structure. Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel. Ageing is classic Murrieta: around 18 months in American oak barrels (a hallmark of the house style), followed by extended bottle ageing to integrate flavours and soften tannins.
This approach results in a Reserva that is wonderfully balanced, ripe yet fresh, structured yet silky, with oak that supports rather than overshadows the fruit.
Marqués de Murrieta Tinto Reserva, Tasting Notes
Deep ruby with garnet highlights. The nose shows red cherry, plum, blackberry and dried flowers, interwoven with vanilla, clove, cedar, tobacco leaf and a touch of roasted coffee. The palate is elegant and medium-bodied with polished tannins, offering flavours of ripe berries, sweet spice, savoury herbs and warm oak. Long, harmonious and subtly earthy on the finish. A quintessential Rioja Reserva.
Food pairing suggestion: Rioja-Style Lamb with Peppers & Paprika. The wine’s spice and savoury depth pair beautifully with tender lamb and smoky pimentón.
