Long before Tokaji Aszú became one of the world’s most celebrated sweet wines, Szamorodni was the traditional wine of the region. Today it remains one of Tokaj’s most fascinating styles, offering a wonderful balance between richness, complexity and freshness. Royal Tokaji’s Sweet Szamorodni sits beautifully between a late-harvest wine and a classic Aszú, delivering layers of honeyed fruit and spice while retaining the vibrant acidity that makes the wines of Tokaj so distinctive. Aromas of dried apricot, plum and orange peel rise from the glass, accompanied by notes of acacia honey, vanilla and warming baking spices. The palate is rich and mouth-filling, yet never heavy, with concentrated flavours of peach, marmalade and honeycomb supported by bright acidity. Gentle oxidative and nutty notes from barrel ageing add further complexity, leading to a long, elegant finish that lingers beautifully. It is a wine that feels luxurious and comforting while remaining remarkably fresh and balanced.
Royal Tokaji Sweet Szamorodni, Producer
Founded in 1990 following the fall of communism in Hungary, Royal Tokaji played a pivotal role in restoring the international reputation of Tokaj’s historic sweet wines. The winery was established with the involvement of renowned wine writer Hugh Johnson and quickly became one of the region’s benchmark producers. Working with some of Tokaj’s finest vineyards, Royal Tokaji focuses on preserving traditional methods while showcasing the extraordinary quality of the region’s volcanic soils and noble rot-affected grapes. Today the estate is widely regarded as one of the leading names in Hungarian wine and has helped introduce a new generation of wine lovers to the unique styles of Tokaj.
Royal Tokaji Sweet Szamorodni, Terroir & Winemaking
Sweet Szamorodni is made from whole bunches of grapes harvested together, rather than selecting individual botrytised berries as is done for Aszú. The bunches contain a naturally varying proportion of healthy and noble rot-affected fruit, creating a style that balances concentration with freshness. The vineyards of Tokaj are planted on volcanic soils that contribute minerality and structure, while autumn mists encourage the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. Following fermentation, the wine is aged in oak casks for an extended period, often under a light veil of yeast, which helps develop additional complexity and subtle oxidative character. The result is a wine that combines honeyed sweetness, nutty richness and vibrant acidity in equal measure.
