Astral de Château Puybarbe: Modern Côtes de Bourg Red

Astral de Château Puybarbe is modern and expressive, with dark fruit, spice and smooth tannins. Balanced and polished, it offers serious Bordeaux character at a great price.

Château Puybarbe is in the heart of the Côtes de Bourg, on hills overlooking the Gironde estuary opposite Margaux. Finnish couple Riku and Anna Väänänen bought the estate in 2014 and farm it sustainably, without herbicides or chemical fertilisers. It has held High Environmental Value certification since 2017.

Astral is mostly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Malbec and Cabernet Franc, grown on clay-limestone soils. It is aged for 11 months in contact with French oak, adding polish and spice.

Expect ripe bramble, cassis, black cherry, mint and warm spice. The palate is full-bodied and structured, with soft acidity and classic Bordeaux tannins. It benefits from decanting.

Astral de Château Puybarbe Food Pairing Suggestion:

Perfect with a Sunday roast, roast duck with root vegetables, aubergine parmigiana, mature Cheddar or aged Comté.
