Yalumba Samuel’s Collection Shiraz: Classic Barossa with a Modern Touch
Yalumba Samuel’s Collection Shiraz is everything you want from a good Barossa red: rich, dark-fruited and generous, but with enough freshness and balance to stop all that ripeness becoming too heavy. It is a bold, satisfying Shiraz with a slightly more polished, contemporary feel than the huge Barossa styles of old.
Yalumba was founded in the Barossa in 1849 by Samuel Smith and remains in the hands of the Hill-Smith family six generations later. Now recognised as Australia’s oldest family-owned winery, Yalumba has always mixed tradition with a willingness to experiment. They even operate their own cooperage at the estate, producing barrels specifically for their wines, something remarkably unusual in the modern wine world.
Samuel’s Collection is named in honour of founder Samuel Smith and celebrates the adventurous spirit that has shaped Yalumba since its beginnings. The Shiraz comes from vineyards across the Barossa, bringing together fruit from different soils and sites to create a wine with plenty of depth and distinctly Barossa character.
In the glass, expect generous blackberry and ripe plum, with darker blackcurrant notes alongside chocolate, warming spice, clove and a little pepper. It is rich and full-flavoured, with soft, velvety tannins and plenty of juicy dark fruit through the palate. Despite its size, there is a lovely freshness to it, leading into a long, plush and gently savoury finish.
Yalumba Samuel’s Collection Shiraz Food Pairing Suggestion:
This is made for hearty food. Try it with slow-cooked beef short ribs, a chargrilled rib-eye steak or sticky barbecue pork ribs. The ripe fruit works beautifully with caramelised, smoky flavours, while the wine has enough structure to stand up to richer cuts of meat.
