Agricola Punica is a successful colaboration between the Tenuta San Guido Group (famous for their Sassiccaia wines), Santadi’s President Antonello Pilloni, and renowned Tuscan winemaker Dr Giacomo Tachis. The latter was the one who conjured up the idea of Sardinia and persuaded everyone that they could make a superb wine from grapes cultivated in Sulcis.
The Basso Sulcis region of southwest Sardinia is home to two estates Barrua and Narcao, which were purchased by AGRIPUNICA in 2002. After the very first harvest, no questions were left that it would be a superb wine. All winemakers understood the true potential of this area. This part of the island has the perfect environment for red-berried wines. Summers are hot and dry, and winters are pleasant. The brightness of the grape enables them to mature to the point where tannin polymerization starts in the berry even when it is still on the vine. This area is distinctive due to the precise amount of light. As Dr Tachis has often emphasised, the sun gives heat and light, which helps grapes mature very well. In particular, the sea has a fantastic influence by regulating the intense summer heat and stabilising the temperature.
Agricola Punica Montessu is a Sardinian version of the super-Tuscan. Elegant and powerful, this wine is intense in fruit aromas with a liquorice finish. The aromas develop into elegant rosemary and pepper with notes of capers. Smooth as a result of 12 month ageing in French barrels, with flavours of floral spice, tobacco, and leather, with velvety finish.
Food pairing suggestion: Rosemary and red wine braised lamb shanks.
