History
The Antinori family’s winemaking tradition began in 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the Florentine Winemakers’ Guild. Since then, the family has remained at the helm of the business, passing down knowledge and passion for wine through 26 generations. Rooted in the heart of Tuscany, Antinori has played a pivotal role in the evolution of Italian wine, particularly in challenging outdated rules and embracing innovation. In the 1970s, Marchese Piero Antinori revolutionised the industry by producing Tignanello, a bold departure from the restrictions of traditional appellations, blending Sangiovese with international varieties and ageing it in barriques. This marked the birth of the “Super Tuscan” category and placed Antinori at the forefront of modern Italian winemaking.
Wines
Antinori’s portfolio is extensive, covering a wide range of styles and regions, though it remains especially revered for its Tuscan reds. Tignanello and Solaia, both produced from the family’s Tignanello estate, are among the most celebrated wines in Italy, blending innovation with deep respect for the land. Beyond these flagship labels, the family oversees other prestigious estates such as Badia a Passignano, Pian delle Vigne in Montalcino, and Castello della Sala in Umbria, which produces the elegant white wine Cervaro della Sala. Across all these labels, Antinori maintains a consistent focus on expressing terroir and preserving balance and complexity, whether through traditional Chianti Classico or contemporary blends.
Global Presence
While Antinori’s roots are firmly planted in Tuscany and Umbria, the family has expanded its influence far beyond Italy. In the United States, they co-own the Antica estate in Napa Valley, producing wines that reflect both Italian heritage and Californian terroir. In Chile, they have partnered with the Haras de Pirque estate in the Maipo Valley, combining New World energy with Old World expertise. Additional ventures in Hungary and other emerging wine regions further reflect Antinori’s forward-looking vision and commitment to global excellence. Despite this international reach, the family maintains full ownership of their company – an increasingly rare feat in the world of high-end wine – ensuring that their values and vision remain consistent across all operations.
