Founded in 1776, Boekenhoutskloof sits nestled in the picturesque Franschhoek valley, earning its name which translates to “ravine of the Boekenhout” (pronounced Book-n-Howed). The name is inspired but the Boekenhout, an indigenous Cape Beech tree highly valued for furniture crafting. In 1993, the farm and its historic homestead were purchased and meticulously restored. Subsequently, a new vineyard planting initiative was launched, encompassing a diverse range of grape varieties such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon, and Viognier.
Two of the vineyards used to produce this Semillon were established in the historic Franschhoek Riverbed, on little to no slope, with unirrigated bush grapes planted in the years 1902 and 1942. These vineyards have a good foundation in alluvial soils with a lot of loam. Further up the valley, on a 45-degree south-facing slope made of decomposed granite and quartz, lies where the third vineyard, which was planted in 1936. A few of the Semillon grapes in these vineyards have evolved organically into Semillon Gris.
2021 Vintage
The nose exhibits a refined and graceful profile, marked by subtle hints of grapefruit, greengage, chamomile, and apple blossom, along with undertones of exotic spices. This floral essence persists onto the palate, revealing notes of yellow peach, poached pear, and nectarine, set against a backdrop of vibrant mandarin and green fig flavours. Balanced acidity and a full-bodied with the ripe stone fruit notes contribute to the palate’s complexity, accented by hints of fenugreek, black cardamom, and Cape fynbos, completing this well-rounded and harmonious wine.
