Marc Kent, managing partner and technical director of Boekenhoutskloof, is the inspiration behind the different brands and properties under the Boekenhoutskloof umbrella. Although he is not hesitant to try anything new, his main commitment is to excellence at every turn and in every aspect.
The Boekenhoutskloof Syrah comes from two Swartland sites Porseleinberg and Goldmine, that were purchased because of their distinctive terroir — rocky bedrock and soils made of decomposed mica schist. This is the second vintage claiming Wine of Origin Swartland, 80% of the fruit is from Porseleinberg and 20% is from Goldmine. From October 2015 until the end of January 2016, the area was hit by intense heat waves, creating a vintage year where phenolic ripeness had to compete with quickly growing sugar levels. To ensure modest yields, create balance, and reduce stress on these dryland vines, it was necessary to begin early green harvesting around the time of veraison.
A brooding compote of dark cherry fruit, black olives, perfume, and spice makes up this complex nose. A thick, round palate with strong flavours of allspice, liquorice, and black pepper follows through on the blackberries, youngberries, brambles, and violets. The mid-palate is focused, but also austere and lean. With integrated acidity, robust, fine-grained tannins to balance, and a savoury, almost Rhône-like flavour, the wine provides structure and excellent ageability. The spicy finish lingers with notes of cardamom, nutmeg, and cloves as well as faint garrigue undertones.
Food pairing suggestion: Spicy grilled quail with rocket salad and grilled fennel.
