Cantina La Guardiense I Classici Guardiolo Falanghina Sannio is a fragrant, refreshing Italian white with plenty of charm. Expressive fruit and floral aromas give it an inviting character, while its lively freshness makes it particularly appealing at the table. If you enjoy bright whites but fancy exploring beyond your usual bottle, this is a lovely introduction to one of Campania’s distinctive local grapes.
La Guardiense began in 1960 when 33 founding members joined forces to build a better future for their community. Their number included 28 farmers, two teachers and three doctors, making this a rather unusual founding committee. Based in Guardia Sanframondi, near Benevento, the cooperative has grown into an important voice for the wines of the Sannio, keeping local growers and regional grape varieties at the heart of its work.
This Falanghina belongs to the producer’s I Classici collection. Its home is the hilly Sannio Beneventano area of Campania, where the landscape includes alluvial terraces, volcanic ground over grey tuff and older hills with marl soils. That varied setting provides an interesting backdrop to a wine whose appeal lies in its aromatic expression and refreshing character.
In the winery, brief cold maceration helps draw out the grapes’ aromas, with oxygen carefully excluded during processing. Fermentation takes place entirely in stainless steel at cool temperatures, protecting the wine’s fruit and floral qualities. Malolactic fermentation is avoided, helping retain its lively acidity. The approach keeps the emphasis firmly on Falanghina’s own personality.
In the glass, it is pale straw yellow with green highlights. The nose is distinctly fruity and floral, with an aromatic intensity that invites another sniff before the first sip. On the palate, that expressive character comes with pleasing complexity and a bright, refreshing feel. There is enough interest to enjoy a glass on its own, although its freshness makes opening it with dinner an especially good idea.
Cantina La Guardiense I Classici Guardiolo Falanghina Sannio Food Pairing Suggestion:
Try it with grilled sea bass, courgette risotto or roast chicken with Mediterranean vegetables. Its freshness brings balance to softer, richer textures, making mozzarella and other soft cheeses appealing companions too. For a relaxed evening, pour it alongside a Neapolitan-style margherita pizza: the fragrant wine, creamy mozzarella and fresh basil make an appetising combination. Serve chilled to bring its refreshing character into focus.
