In Argentina, the high-altitude renaissance is currently being led by the fourth generation of the Catena family. Nicolás and Laura Catena Zapata are a father and daughter duo who currently run Catena Zapata. Nicola Catena, Nicola’s grandfather, planted the first Malbec vines in 1902. Currently, six historic estates — Angelica, La Pirámide, Nicasia, Domingo, Adrianna, and Angélica Sur — provide the wines for Bodega Catena Zapata.
This is a limited release Malbec from the best estate vineyards, Nicasia and Angelica, planted at 1095 and 920 metres above sea level, at the base of the Andes Mountains. The grapes produced here are extremely concentrated and intensely flavourful thanks to the careful hand-tending and low yields of the vines. The young wine is then fermented in new French oak barrels for 24 months after the grapes are fermented in small batches.
On the palate it’s full of juicy blackberries, as well as hints of sweet spices, vanilla, violets, and tobacco. This is a new blend that dates back to earlier blending traditions in an effort to reverse the trend of so many single-vineyard bottlings.
This wine is expressive and open, ready to be enjoyed now or can be cellared for 10-15 years.
Food pairing suggestion: Slow cooked and seared Côte de boeuf with potato terrine and red wine jus.
Did you know? The Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino label pays tribute to the noble Malbec grape’s epic story as well as the variety’s history in France and ascent in Argentina. Four women represent various moments in the history of this grape. The origin of Malbec is symbolised by Eleanor of Aquitaine: the Cahors bridge is where Malbec first found its niche with a powerful, Old World influence. The journey to the New World and the intrepid travellers who united Europe and the Americas are represented by the Immigrant. Malbec’s demise in the Old World, which allowed for its rebirth in the New World, is personified by Phylloxera. Adrianna Catena, who represents Bodega Catena Zapata, evokes birth, the earth, and motherhood while sharing the wealth of the New World.
