Domaine Joël Delaunay is a family-owned estate located in the heart of the Loire Valley, near the Cher River, approximately 50 kilometers east of Tours. The estate has been in the Delaunay family for five generations, with Thierry Delaunay currently at the helm. Under Thierry’s guidance, the domaine emphasizes sustainable viticulture practices, including the use of grass cover between vine rows to promote biodiversity and soil health. Notably, Joël Delaunay was among the first in the Touraine region to adopt screwcap closures in 2004, reflecting the family’s commitment to innovation and quality preservation.
Terroir & Winemaking
The ‘Les Cabotines’ Rosé is crafted from a blend of 70% Gamay and 30% Pineau d’Aunis grapes, sourced from vineyards planted between 1970 and 1993. These vines thrive in “perruches” soils – a mix of silica, clay, and flint—which contribute to the wine’s mineral character.
Harvested grapes undergo direct pneumatic pressing to extract juice gently, preserving delicate aromas and flavours. Fermentation occurs at a controlled temperature of 14°C in stainless steel tanks, ensuring the retention of fresh fruit characteristics. Post-fermentation, the wine is aged on fine lees for 3 to 6 months, enhancing its texture and complexity.
Tasting Notes
‘Les Cabotines’ presents a pale salmon-pink hue, indicative of its delicate extraction. The nose is expressive, offering compelling scents of red berry fruits and floral notes. On the palate, these red fruit flavours persist, complemented by a subtle peppery touch characteristic of Pineau d’Aunis. The wine is lively and tense, with a silky texture that leads to a vibrant finish.
This rosé is versatile and food-friendly, and is an excellent choice for aperitifs.
Food pairing suggestion: Grilled sardines.
