Domaine Lafage Côté Est, Producer
Domaine Lafage is a dynamic, family-run estate located between Perpignan and the Spanish border in the Côtes Catalanes, Roussillon. Managed by Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage since 2001, the domaine carries a winemaking heritage that stretches back to 1798. Having travelled and worked harvests across the globe (from California to South Africa and Germany) the Lafages bring an international perspective to their deep local roots. Today, the estate leads the way in sustainable viticulture, with regenerative farming practices, water monitoring, and a focus on climate resilience. Early harvesting and careful vineyard management help retain natural freshness in this warm Mediterranean region, translating into wines of striking purity and balance.
Domaine Lafage Côté Est, Terroir & Winemaking
The vineyards of Côté Est are planted on gently rolling hills of clay-limestone soils studded with rolled pebbles, at a density of 3,800 vines per hectare. The name Côté Est (meaning “East Side”) refers to the vineyards’ easterly exposure, which captures the cool morning light and shields the grapes from the full intensity of the southern sun. This cooler orientation preserves acidity and bright fruit expression in the resulting wine.
The blend is composed of Grenache Blanc (70%), Chardonnay (20%), and Roussanne (10%), from vines averaging 80 years for Grenache and 20 years for the other varieties. The Grenache Blanc is harvested at around 14% potential alcohol, then cold macerated for 24 hours before racking. Each grape variety is fermented separately at controlled temperatures (16–18°C) to preserve aromatics, and the final wine is aged on fine lees for three months to build texture and complexity.
Domaine Lafage Côté Est, Tasting Notes
Domaine Lafage Côté Est is a beautifully lush and expressive white wine, balancing Mediterranean richness with refreshing coastal vitality. Aromas of orange marmalade, beeswax, and exotic fruits lead to a medium-bodied palate that is both silky and bright. Subtle hints of honey and stone fruit give way to a clean, mineral-driven finish that enlivens the senses. Elegant and fruit-forward, this wine is best enjoyed in its youth to appreciate its freshness and charm.
Food pairing suggestion: Perfect as an aperitif, or alongside grilled sea bass with citrus salsa, prawns with garlic and herbs, or a goat’s cheese salad with orange and fennel.
