Bogle Chardonnay: Big, Buttery California Chardonnay

If you like your Chardonnay rich, silky and generously oaked, Bogle Chardonnay is very much your sort of wine. This is classic California Chardonnay with plenty of personality: ripe orchard fruit, creamy texture, vanilla and warm spice, all wrapped up in a satisfyingly long finish. It delivers the bold, buttery style that many Chardonnay drinkers actively seek out, while still keeping enough freshness to stop it feeling heavy.

Bogle is a sixth-generation farming family with roots in California agriculture stretching back well over a century. Their wine story began in 1968, when Warren and Chris Bogle planted the family’s first 20 acres of vines. Today, the family has estate vineyards in Clarksburg, Lodi and the Sierra Foothills, alongside long-standing relationships with growers across some of California’s best wine regions. Farming remains central to the business, with a strong emphasis on sustainable viticulture and working closely with growers to maintain fruit quality.

Bogle’s approach to Chardonnay is particularly interesting. Half of the wine is fermented in stainless steel, preserving freshness and bright fruit, while the other half is barrel fermented for richness and texture. The wine is aged on its lees and stirred by hand each month, adding further creaminess and depth. The result sits firmly on the richer end of the Chardonnay spectrum without losing its fruit underneath the oak.

Expect juicy pear and crisp apple alongside honeycomb, vanilla and warm baking spice. The palate is rounded and silky, with ripe orchard fruit developing into creamy, gently toasted flavours and a lingering finish reminiscent of warm apple pie. It’s rich, full-flavoured and wonderfully comforting, especially if you’re looking for those unmistakable buttery, oaky Chardonnay notes.

For lovers of lean, steely Chardonnay, this probably isn’t the bottle. But if you enjoy a generous California Chardonnay with plenty of texture, oak and ripe fruit, Bogle offers an impressive amount of wine for the money.

Bogle Chardonnay Food Pairing Suggestion:

The richness makes Bogle Chardonnay brilliant with food. Try it with roast chicken, grilled halibut or cod, roast pork or a creamy pasta carbonara. For something rather more indulgent, seared foie gras with toasted brioche is a fantastic match, with the wine’s creamy texture, ripe fruit and toasty oak working beautifully alongside the richness of the dish.
