Emil Bauer Bullshit Grauburgunder: German Pinot Gris with Attitude
Have you tried Grauburgunder before? You probably know the grape as Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio. Emil Bauer’s version, cheekily named Bullshit, is fresh, fruity and full of character, a very cool wine from very cool winemakers.
Weingut Emil Bauer & Söhne is a traditional family estate in the Pfalz, now run by the fifth generation, brothers Alexander and Martin Bauer. Alexander is the winemaker and Martin looks after marketing, which might explain the playful, creative labels the estate has become known for.
What sets this wine apart is the style. It has more ripe, tropical fruit than a typical Italian Pinot Grigio, while still keeping a lovely freshness. It is fermented and aged in a mix of stainless steel tanks and wooden barrels, giving it a bit of extra texture.
Expect a brilliant yellow-green colour, with citrus, ripe pear, red apple and a floral touch on the nose. The palate is dry, crisp and fresh, with juicy fruit, pleasant acidity and a clean finish.
Emil Bauer Grauburgunder Food Pairing Suggestion:
Try it with roast chicken, pork schnitzel, creamy pasta or a fresh salad with grilled halloumi. It is also great with mildly spiced Asian dishes.
