Greywacke is the Judd family’s Marlborough label and the name of New Zealand’s most prevalent bedrock. All of the rivers and alluvial vineyard soils in Marlborough contain these discrete grey river stones. Greywacke was founded in 2009 and continues to be a family business, and now the company exports its wines to all corners of the globe.
Each year Kevin Judd holds back a few bottles of the wines he believes will benefit from further bottle age. 2012 was a very cool and low-yielding year, producing outstanding quality wines. Greywacke Archive Release Pinot Noir is full of tempting aromas: vine-ripened red and black berries that have been delicately sautéed with dried oregano and some cloves. A delicately smokey infusion and exotic fruit richness in a beautifully fragrant, feminine style of Marlborough pinot. The palate has a fruitcake-like richness, substantial weight, and traditional cool-climate vitality.
