Mottura Stilio Primitivo di Manduria: Rich, Velvety and Warming
Mottura Stilio Primitivo di Manduria is a rich, dark and wonderfully warming red from southern Italy. Packed with ripe fruit, sweet spice and just a touch of Puglian wildness, it is everything Primitivo lovers look for: generous, velvety and irresistibly smooth.
Cantine Mottura has been producing wine in Salento since 1927 and is now led by the fourth generation of the family. The estate specialises in Puglia’s indigenous grape varieties, combining traditional vineyard practices with modern winemaking and a strong commitment to sustainable viticulture.
Stilio is one of Mottura’s flagship wines, made using old-vine Primitivo grown in the celebrated Manduria area. Many of the vines are trained using the traditional alberello bush-vine system, helping the grapes withstand Puglia’s intense summer heat while retaining freshness. Low yields produce deeply concentrated fruit, while gentle extraction keeps the tannins soft and supple. Ageing in oak adds notes of vanilla, cocoa and spice without overwhelming the wine’s generous fruit.
Deep ruby in colour with garnet edges, Stilio opens with aromas of black cherry, plum jam, blackberry and dried fig. Hints of vanilla, cocoa, cinnamon and tobacco follow, giving the wine plenty of warmth and complexity. The palate is full-bodied and luscious, with layers of dark fruit and chocolate wrapped in velvety tannins. A subtle savoury note keeps everything beautifully balanced before a long, smooth and softly sweet finish.
Mottura Stilio Primitivo di Manduria Food Pairing Suggestion:
Serve with slow-braised lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic. The wine’s ripe dark fruit and warming spice work beautifully with the tender meat, while its savoury character complements the herbs and rich cooking juices.
