Hattingley Valley is an English wine producer based in Hampshire. It’s been on the market since 2008, and after investing time and money into a great team and high-end technology, it has quickly established itself as one of the UK’s most successful wineries.
Hattingley Valley has never only relied on its own Hampshire vineyards but has always purchased fruit from a variety of areas around England. Despite its limited size, England has a wide variety of soil types and microclimates that greatly influence its chilly, marginal climate. Spreading the risk over a number of locations is particularly helpful because frost may be a big concern.
The winemakers have worked with a number of experienced farmers who either already had vineyards or wanted to diversify from other forms of farming during the previous years. Emma, the head winemaker, has travelled far and wide in search of the greatest cultivators with the highest prospects for starting vineyards.
The winemakers always use the best chardonnay parcels for Blanc de Blancs bottles. The wines are matured for a minimum of four years, developing a lovely honeyed character but preserving white stone fruit and citrus fruit. On the palate, it’s clean and mineral, with flavours of pastry and brioche. It boasts a creamy texture and a lengthy, nuanced finish that follows a well-balanced, reviving acidity.
No need to rush through drinking them all at once; instead, buy a case and save some for special occasions. The wine will continue to grow and develop over the upcoming years.
Food pairing suggestion: Delicious with Hampshire hot smoked trout pate, local salami and charcuterie.
