Mullineux Signature Swartland Syrah brings together the darker, more serious side of the Swartland with the freshness and perfume that define the region’s best modern wines. This is an intense, concentrated Syrah built around blackberry, black cherry and dark plum, lifted by violets, cracked pepper and distinctive savoury notes of black olive and dried herbs. Despite its depth, it never becomes heavy or overly extracted. Whole-bunch fermentation introduces fragrance and energy, while fine tannins give the wine structure without toughness. Fruit is drawn from vineyards planted across several of the Swartland’s important soil types, creating a wine with layers of spice, texture and mineral detail. The supplied 2024 offer particularly highlights its brooding black fruit, subtle spiciness and impressive concentration, while still retaining the purity and vibrancy that have become hallmarks of Mullineux.

Mullineux Signature Swartland Syrah, Producer

Mullineux was founded in 2007 by husband-and-wife team Chris and Andrea Mullineux and has become one of South Africa’s most celebrated modern estates. The winery has been named Platter’s Wine Guide Winery of the Year five times, reflecting the consistency and influence it has achieved in a relatively short period. Their philosophy centres on allowing the vineyards and ancient soils of the Swartland to speak clearly, supported by thoughtful, low-intervention winemaking rather than heavy manipulation.

Sustainability is equally important to the estate. Mullineux has increasingly focused on organic and regenerative viticulture, achieving full organic certification in 2025 and becoming the first South African winery to achieve Regenerative Organic Certification. The Signature wines bring together carefully selected vineyards from across the Swartland, offering a broader expression of the region than Mullineux’s individual Single Terroir bottlings.

Mullineux Signature Swartland Syrah, Terroir & Winemaking

The fruit is selected from vineyards across the Swartland planted on an extraordinary mixture of shale, schist, decomposed granite and iron-rich soils. Each soil type contributes something different: granite tends to emphasise perfume and freshness, schist brings concentration and spice, while iron-rich sites lend greater weight and structure. Bringing these parcels together creates a complete expression of Swartland Syrah rather than focusing on a single vineyard or soil type. The attached 2024 offer specifically highlights this diverse vineyard sourcing as central to the wine’s intensity and complexity.

Around 90% of the grapes are whole-bunch fermented, retaining stems during fermentation to increase perfume, freshness and savoury complexity. Gentle extraction allows the wine to develop structure without coarse tannins. The 2024 release then spends approximately 11 months in 500-litre French oak barrels, which provides subtle spice and texture without overwhelming the fruit. Mullineux’s Signature Syrah is traditionally fermented with indigenous yeasts and handled with minimal intervention, allowing the character of the individual vineyard parcels to remain clear.

Mullineux Signature Swartland Syrah 2024, Tasting Notes

Deep ruby-purple in colour, with a concentrated yet beautifully lifted nose. Blackberry, dark plum and black cherry are joined by violets, black pepper and dried herbs, followed by more savoury notes of black olive, cured meat and subtle spice.

The palate is rich and layered, with juicy black and red fruit framed by fine, velvety tannins. Whole-bunch fermentation brings an attractive floral and herbal lift, preventing the dark fruit from feeling too dense. Black pepper, liquorice, olive and gentle baking spice emerge towards the finish, while refreshing acidity gives the wine impressive balance and length. The overall impression is powerful but controlled – unmistakably warm-climate Syrah, yet with a freshness and savoury edge that recalls the Northern Rhône. The 2024 pre-arrival offer describes the fruit as particularly brooding, with the French oak adding a restrained spicy note.

Did you know?

Mullineux uses Syrah to demonstrate just how dramatically soil can influence the same grape variety in the Swartland.

Their Single Terroir range separates Syrah grown on granite, schist and iron-rich soils, with each wine made using very similar techniques so that differences in the vineyard remain the main variable. Granite generally gives the most fragrant and finely structured wines; schist tends towards darker fruit, spice and denser tannins; while iron-rich soils create fuller, more structured expressions.

The Signature Syrah takes the opposite approach. Instead of isolating one soil type, it combines vineyards across the region, including shale, schist, decomposed granite and iron-rich soils, creating a more complete picture of Swartland Syrah.
