Savage Red: A Seriously Refined South African Syrah
Savage Red is Duncan Savage’s flagship Syrah, bringing together beautifully expressive fruit with the freshness, perfume and restraint that define his wines. This is not a heavy, sweetly fruited style. Instead, it is precise and wonderfully savoury, with enough depth to satisfy lovers of powerful reds but a lightness of touch that keeps every sip lively.
Duncan established Savage Wines after more than a decade at Cape Point Vineyards, where he developed an impressive reputation for producing some of South Africa’s finest coastal wines. Working from his urban winery in Cape Town, he sources grapes from carefully chosen vineyard sites and follows a hands-off approach in the cellar. His wines have become highly sought-after for their purity, sense of place and distinctly elegant character.
Made entirely from Syrah grown in Stellenbosch and the Swartland, Savage Red demonstrates the more refined side of this celebrated Rhône variety. The fruit comes from coastal-influenced vineyards, where cooling conditions help preserve fragrance and acidity. Whole-bunch fermentation adds lift, spice and gentle structure, while maturation in older barrels and larger oak vessels allows the fruit to remain firmly at the centre of the wine.
The nose opens with blackberry, blueberry and brambly red fruit, followed by crushed violets, rose petals and a distinctive flicker of white pepper. With air, darker and more savoury details begin to emerge, including black olive, fennel, dried herbs and a subtle stony quality. The palate is medium-bodied and finely balanced, combining concentrated dark fruit with fresh acidity and beautifully measured tannins. A cool, lightly saline character runs through the wine, leading into a long, peppery and savoury finish.
Although already expressive, Savage Red has the structure and concentration to develop beautifully in bottle. Decanting it for an hour will help reveal its full aromatic detail if you are enjoying it young.
Savage Red Food Pairing Suggestion:
Serve Savage Red with herb-crusted roast lamb, venison with blackberry sauce or slow-cooked beef with rosemary and black olives. Its peppery freshness would also be excellent with grilled aubergine, mushroom and lentil stew, or a smoky braai-style feast. The wine’s savoury character complements deeply flavoured dishes, while its bright acidity keeps richer food combinations feeling fresh.
