Introducing the remarkable Sassicaia 2017, an exquisite red crafted by one of Italy’s most renowned producers. Hailing from the esteemed Tenuta San Guido winery, this wine epitomises elegance, complexity, and finesse.

Sassicaia has long been recognised as a pioneer in the Super Tuscan category. It is born from vineyards located in the Bolgheri area, a coastal region in Tuscany, characterised by a unique microclimate and mineral-rich soils. This combination of factors imparts distinctive flavours and structure to the wine, setting it apart from other Bordeaux-style blends.

Sassicaia 2017: Producer

Tenuta San Guido has a rich history spanning several generations. Founded in the 1940s by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, the winery has remained a family-owned estate committed to crafting exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of Bolgheri. Their unwavering dedication to quality, meticulous vineyard management, and innovative winemaking techniques have solidified Tenuta San Guido’s status as a pioneer in the Super Tuscan movement, and their wines continue to captivate wine enthusiasts around the globe.

Sassicaia 2017: Vintage

Bolgheri experienced both severe April frosts and a scorching June heat during the growth season. Although vines at lower elevations were mostly affected by the frosts, the heatwave was more difficult to escape. It was even nicknamed Lucifer because it was so intense, with temperatures reaching 40C for days, naturally followed by drought.

Despite the unfavourable weather condition and early harvest, 2017 managed to produce some outstanding wines. The harvest was significantly reduced, and the grapes that did survive created wines with great precision, freshness and elegance.

Sassicaia 2017: Winemaking

The harvest is 100% hand-picked and sorted, followed by gentle destemming and pressing, and then spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks. After the malolactic fermentation was finished (again, ending completely naturally), the wine was matured for between 20 and 25 months in French oak barriques and a minor portion in American wood. The ageing period was then determined based on the seasonal tendency of the vintage.

Sassicaia 2017: In The Glass

Upon pouring, the Sassicaia 2017 reveals a deep, ruby-red colour that captivates the eye. The nose is greeted with a symphony of aromas, showcasing ripe black fruits, cassis, and hints of tobacco. With each sip, the palate experiences a harmonious blend of flavours, combining blackberries, plums, and dark chocolate, intricately woven together. The wine’s velvety tannins provide a luscious texture, while its vibrant acidity adds freshness and balance. The finish is long and lingering, leaving a trail of spice and a touch of vanilla on the palate.

Savoring Sassicaia 2017 is an indulgent experience, perfect for those seeking a wine of exceptional quality and sophistication. This masterpiece from Tenuta San Guido exemplifies the artistry and dedication that have made Sassicaia a timeless classic in the world of fine wines.

Decant before drinking. Will continue to improve in bottle for 20+ years.
