Established in 1776, Boekenhoutskloof is a farm nestled in the remote corner of the picturesque Franschhoek Valley. The Wolftrap label is crafted on this estate under the guidance of Marc Kent, who serves as the owner, chief winemaker, and driving force behind both Boekenhoutskloof and The Wolftrap. This wine pays homage to the early pioneers who, in the bygone days, explored the untamed Cape wilderness and constructed a wolf trap on the Boekenhoutskloof property. To this day, no wolf, whether real or mythical, has been spotted in the valley.
The winemaker’s approach involves minimal intervention, seeking to achieve a pure expression of the Swartland terroir. The producer is also keep to preserve the region’s distinctive biodiversity, they are actively eliminating invasive alien plants from the farm. Extensive areas of the mountain have already undergone clearance of pine and gum trees. Ongoing efforts include the restoration of the delicate riverine region and the reintroduction of diverse protea species.
The wine opens up with aromas of dark and contemplative character,
rich in black fruit and hints of violets, pepper, and cured meat, followed by subtle notes of dried coriander and tar. The savoury, gamey essence and the dark berry notes translate onto the palate, introducing flavours of liquorice, black olives, cardamom, with subtle traces of cranberry, red currant, and cloves. The mid-palate unfolds as full, creamy, and smooth, with supple tannins and seamlessly integrated acidity. Sweet tobacco and spicy nuances from delicate oak add depth. The wine leaves a lasting impression on the palate, with a smoky, slightly charred, yet remarkably juicy finish.
Food pairing suggestion: Beef stew, or hard, full-bodied cheese like Grano Padano cheese.
