Mourvèdre is a temperamental red wine grape with a rich history. This variety has been known in Europe for approximately 2,500 years. It goes by the alternative name Mataro, derived from the Catalonian town of Mataró, and is also called Monastrell in Spain.

This versatile grape has adapted to diverse wine regions worldwide. It thrives in the sun-drenched areas of Rhône and Provence in France, flourishes in Spain’s Valencia and Jumilla regions, and contributes significantly to wine production in parts of California and Washington state. In Australia, where it’s also known as Mataro, Mourvèdre has been cultivated for at least 150 years.

Mourvèdre produces rich, full-bodied wines with complex flavors. These include notes of ripe blackberries and plums, with subtle hints of black pepper and thyme. The grape is often used in blends, most notably in the well-regarded GSM combination (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre).
